To join the Housing Choice Voucher Program, the family's gross income must fall below 50% of County Median Income. To remain on the Program, it must fall below 80% of County Median Income. (However, it's important to understand that a family's gross income may fall well below the 80% County Median Income limits, but they still may not qualify because 30% of their monthly income is sufficient, according to program standards, to afford their housing expenses. For example, a family of two may have gross income of $40,000, but after allowable deductions, 30% of their monthly income is $988, which in Brown County is sufficient to afford a rental unit for two.)
