Q. What information do I need to bring to my appointment?
A. Please bring the following information to your appointment:
- Proof of Social Security numbers for your entire household. (Social Security cards, Medical assistance cards, Tribal ID cards and Pay check stubs only)
- Proof of GROSS income from all sources for your ENTIRE household for the past three {3} months; the three months prior to your application date. {For example, if your appointment is on November 10, you must provide income verification for August, September and October.}
- If you buy heating fuel, please provide evidence of your household's heating costs for the past 12 months.
- A recent Wisconsin Public Service bill.
- We also encourage you to bring a translator if needed.
If all information is not brought to the appointment, your application will be delayed.
Q. How often can I apply for Energy Assistance?
A. The Energy season runs from October 1 - May 15 of every year. A household is allowed one benefit amount per season. A separate application is processed each year.
Q. Do I qualify for Energy Assistance if I don’t have a balance on my account with my utility company?
A. Yes, if you are eligible for benefits you will see a credit appear on your utility bill.
Q. How will I receive my energy assistance benefits?
A. The State will send a check to your utility company or if any of your utilities are included in your monthly rent payment then the check will be sent to you.
Q. When will I know what my energy assistance benefit amount will be?
A. Once your application has been entered into the state system you will receive a benefit notice from the state within 45 days.
Q. What times during the day can I schedule an appointment for energy assistance?
A. You can schedule an appointment from 8:30 am-3:30 pm Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. On Tuesdays you can schedule an appointment as late as 5:00 PM. If you have an emergency situation {i.e.: furnace problems, or out of fuel oil/propane} during business hours you can come as a walk-in anytime during the day. If it is after business hours and you do not have heat you need to call the Crisis Center at (920) 436-8888. These times are only for scheduling an appointment during the regular energy season from October 1 - May 15.
Q. What other things can I get help with regarding energy assistance?
A. We have some weatherization supplies at our location. We also have a co-pay program called proactive, and access to a budget counseling workshop through Catholic Charities. You may also be able to apply for Weatherization Program through NEWCAP. (You must first qualify for Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program before being referred for any of the extra programs listed above.)
Q. If I am over the income limit for the Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program, are there any other programs that can help me?
A. Even if you are over the income limit for our WHEAP program there is another program called Keep Wisconsin Warm for which you may be eligible. Please see income guidelines to find out if you qualify for either program. Though you may be eligible for this program funding is not always available. Please check with the energy assistance department before setting up an appointment.
Q. Does ICS assist with water and phone bills?
A. No, at this time we are only assisting with electric and heating bills.
